Journal 1: Discuss expectations for this experience, goals, and what you hope to get out of it personally, academically, and related to your specific organizations.
I hope to become more comfortable in my current leadership roles, as well as gain the confidence to branch out and find more leadership positions. Personally, I hope this will help my communication skills and allow me to improve on my interpersonal skills. In relation to the Marian Spencer Scholars, I hope that this experience will help me determine how best to use my skillset within my position and help me learn how to be an effective leader within the program.
Journal 2: How do you show your values to your leadership team(s) through your actions?
It is important to me that people know what my values are and what I stand for because while I believe that teams should have diverse views and opinions there are some values that are necessary in order to create a safe and welcoming space. I like to create that space by trying to embody the phrase “lead by example”. I showcase the values that I think are necessary, such as integrity or compassion, in the hope that will lead the rest of the group to reflect these values as well as different values that they feel are important. The second part of showing my values is by holding myself and others accountable for our actions. If I make a mistake it is important that I acknowledge that, especially if someone was hurt in the process.
Journal 3: What is your elevator pitch, and where do you want to practice it?
My elevator pitch is my name, major and certificates, as well as my school year. After that, I say that I am a Marian Spencer and a Darwin T. Turner Scholar who is interested in international law and that I would love to learn more about their experiences. I have used my elevator pitch at various networking events, and I’d like to get more practice doing that. I have also modified my elevator pitch a bit to work for meeting other people, like other students in classes. I view it as a short and sweet introduction that works for most situations.
Journal 4: In what ways is trust important during a leadership transition and/or leadership position?
The outgoing group needs to trust that the new leadership can handle leadership responsibilities. The members of the club or organization need to trust that the incoming leaders have their best interests at heart and will be capable and competent leaders. The incoming leadership team needs to trust that the members of their group will respect the transition. Basically, the whole system works on trust, and without that foundation, the organization is bound to be instable.
Journal 5: How does intersectionality influence DEI in our organizations? Discuss strategies for fostering inclusivity and embracing diverse identities.
Clubs and organizations need to recognize that every member comes from different backgrounds and has a number of different parts of their identity that all need to be respected and considered. That means that clubs and organizations should not just tolerate different identities; they should attempt to elevate those differences and provide spaces for members to feel seen, not just accepted.
