HNRS 3065: Art, Architecture, & Engineering in Ancient Rome

Scroll

I have always loved ancient history and I took ENED 1 & 2 in high school, so the coursework was a perfect fit. We spent Wednesday afternoons learning about the history of Rome from its founding to the Renaissance. We also spent a lot of time learning about the art made in Rome and the breakthroughs in technology and engineering that occurred in Italy.

Upon arrival in Italy, we went to Naples for two days where we saw Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the National Archeological Museum. After that, we traveled to Rome and spent about eight hours every day seeing some of the many landmarks of Rome. Some of my favorite places to see were Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, Palazzo Barberini, Castle Sant’Angelo, the ancient Roman Forum, and the Pantheon.

The final project for this class was really open-ended and was built so that everyone’s project would be entirely different. The guidelines were that the project be creative and that it be inspired by our time in Italy. As part of the class, each student had to give an on-site presentation and mine was about daily life in Pompeii and Herculaneum. So, for my final project, I sculpted a baking soda volcano out of clay and recorded an eruption.

“Everything in Italy that is particularly elegant and grand borders upon insanity and absurdity or at least is reminiscent of childhood.”

 Alexander Herzen

In the spring of 2024, I enrolled in my first study abroad experience at UC. I have known since I first started applying to colleges that I wanted to use my time at college to experience the world and grow as a person. When I first saw the description for Art, Architecture, and Engineering in Ancient Rome I knew this was the perfect way to start completing that goal. I also thought the format of an intensive semester-long class followed by a nine-day trip to Italy was a great way to experience studying abroad.
